An index fund works perfectly FOr a long term investor who does not have the expertise, the nerves or even just lacks the time to study and follow the performance of individual companies. The NSE may have not yet attracted fund managers to start and sell index funds due to the fact that the local financial markets have not matured enough. The best way to know if there are any index funds available is to talk to the available fund managers or your local stock broker.
You will be happy to know that index funds beat actively managed funds allover the world almost 100% of the time since they tend to mirror the trend of the whole economy and not the fate of individual companies. Save for occasional dips, economies tend to progressively grow bigger; so do the indices related to them.

first do you agree with this - "with an individual stock, you can lose all of your money. With a stock index fund, for you to lose all of your money, the hundreds of companies listed in the index would all have to go out of business at once"
so if am a long term investor i would rather buy the Stock Index. Just how i do these at NSE?
