Subject: Growth
I think the earnings per share over a period of time is an indicator one can use in valuing a company. Because, generally, companies that grow their pretax earnings at a given rate over time will eventually be sold in the market at those rates in terms of PE. For example, if company X has been growing its earnings over the past 7 years at 15% annually, you can expect it to have a PE of around that in the long term. The key element for investing in such a company is if the company is strong and has great management selling a product with strong growing demand that can easily be predicted. Such companies offer the investor best long term gains and security of the principle. Are they there on the NSE? You Bet...they are.

For an informed analysis of how good a company is as an investment, EPS will not be very useful since it does not give you the how the market prices its earnings. Basic investment dictates that, in contemplating buying an asset, you should know the price (share price in this case) of the asset and compare it to the value (earnings) that you get in return.
Both these are given in the PE ratio which will enable you to make an informed investment decision unlike EPS which only gives you the earnings without the price they will cost you.
