Business Performance
Kenya Airways' regional positioning with Nairobi as its hub makes it strategically well placed to offer airline services to the wider Eastern, Western and Central African regions. Moreover, in those regions where KQ is not strategically placed to compete, it has embarked on synergies especially through code sharing with KLM and route network expansion. Code sharing does contribute to a high load factor. On the other hand, KQ is increasingly coming under pressure from the Middle East Carriers such as Qatar Air, which aim to use Nairobi as their gateway from which to tap other African destination to its hub in Doha. But with the acquisition of six Boeing 787 dream liners (starting in 2010), KQ will be better positioned to offer long haul flights thus reducing the need for passengers, especially those from African destinations, to travel hub-tohub. However, one of its main regional competitors — Ethiopian Airlines — will take receipt of its first dream liner in 2008 hence KQ will increasingly be confronted with a more competitive market terrain.
The company appears to be making headway in its efforts to continue on a path of revenue growth although it has not been equally successful in containing costs, more so, due to the escalation of fuel costs. In the first half of the 2006/07 financial-year, revenues grew by 12.3% to KES 28.50 Billion, while operating costs registered a 14.6% increase to KES 24.40 Billion. Due to its high operating costs its operating margin declined to 14.4% compared to the 16.1% margin registered the previous year.
Future Prospects
In the face of increased global travel, growing regional trade and a vibrant tourism sector, KQ is expected to continue registering growth in passenger turnover, in spite of increasing competition; but it is bound to incur a higher operating cost bill courtesy of the high fuel prices.Updated: Sat, November 4, 2006
