Business Performance
The Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) is currently shifting gear from a recovery phase to a growth and expansion phase. The latter phase involves the opening of seven new branches, the expansion of the ATM network from 84 to 116 and the re-branding of its mortgage subsidiary — Savings & Loan. In addition, the bank is in the process of turning round the Tanzanian subsidiary while at the same time venturing into Southern Sudan. In May, this year the bank opened a branch in Southern Sudan. However, the Southern Sudan venture is heavily dependent on the prospects of the NGO sector in Southern Sudan.
At the end of the 2005 financial year, KCB's customer deposits grew by 15% to KES 64.20 Billion while loans and advances have been, more or less, maintained at their 2004 levels being at KES 36.00 Billion as the bank opted to transfer a greater portion of its funds towards investment in Government securities. Both net interest income and profit before tax have risen considerably in 2005, being at KES 5.13 Billion and KES 1.95 Billion respectively compared to the previous year's levels of KES 3.80 Billion and KES 920.00 Million. The bank's non-performing loans have declined as reflected by the improvement of the ratio of total non-performing loans (NPLs) to total loans from 35.8% in December 2004 to 24.3% in 2005. The bank's capital adequacy, as measured by total capital to total risk weighted assets, has improved from 16.66% to 18.38% in 2005, which gives KCB sufficient leeway for loan expansion.
The upward momentum in profitability has been maintained in 2006 with the third quarter profit before tax rising by 77% to KES 2.26 Billion. Customer deposits were also up by 16% to KES 71.80 Billion while advances improved by 14.7% to KES 41.30 Billion while NPLs were stable at 21.7%.
Future Prospects
With the generally upbeat regional economic outlook and the improvement in its quality of lending, the bank is well placed to continue on the path of improved performance through organic growth.
