Business Performance
Barclays Bank of Kenya (BBK) is the largest bank in Kenya with a 17% market share of total industry deposits. It has a customer deposit base of KES 94.00 Billion while its loans & advances portfolio amounts to KES 70.00 Billion. The corporate and local business market segments are the main drivers of the bank's lending initiatives. BBK lays great emphasis on stringent cost management in its operations; hence its operating expenses witnessed a 12% decline in the third quarter of 2006 to KES 6.20 Billion. In addition, Its loan impairment costs declined by 46.7% to KES 744.00 Million; this comes against the backdrop of a decline in the Non-Performing Loans (NPLs) to Total Loans position from 16.9% in 2005 to 13.73% in September 2006. However, in the near future a reality check may lead to an upward revision of bad debt provisions. In fact the Bank's improved performance in the third quarter of 2006 is partly attributable to the decline in bad debt provisions.
The firm's capital adequacy, in terms of total capital to total risk weighted assets, has improved slightly from 12.1% in the first half to 12.7%, in the third quarter (just above the 12% statutory minimum), which is mainly attributable to increased profitability. In view of this, the bank has opted for higher profit retention as a means to boosting its capital adequacy profile rather than the soliciting of more capital via a rights issue. The Bank preferred to issue a bonus and share split which have no material effect on either core capital or supplementary capital hence they do not shore up capital adequacy; this also signals that the management may at this juncture not foresee any major growth prospects as the bank is rapidly approaching the maturity phase.
Future Prospects
The Bank's future prospects largely depend on its ability to improve on the quality of lending, while continuing to grow both interest and non-interest income.
