Business Performance

The firm is the leading Advertising and Communications agency in Kenya with a 49% market share. Scangroup, seeks to offer integrated marketing services and provide a one stop shop to its clients for services ranging from media advertising to public relations. In its effort to achieve this, the firm embarked on its own vertical integration process through a series of affiliations and acquisitions to form ten main divisions. These affiliations especially with internationally established firms such as Lowe & Partners Worldwide enable the firm to keep abreast with new trends and approaches to advertising.

Ultimately, though, the future performance of the firm will be very much hinged on its ability to create brand value/equity for its clients especially in the first moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. Judging by its past performance the firm has not been able to achieve much in terms of building its customer's brands given its relatively low profit margins, which are an indicator that clients are not willing to pay a premium for its advertising services since they are not assured that the advertising will enhance brand loyalty. Accordingly, although the firm turned in a profit of KES 143.00 Million, its operating margins were a mere 9% with 2006 forecasts being indicative of a continuation in this trend.

The firm has continued on its acquisition binge, taking up a 50% stake in an advertising upstart — Redsky — which currently has a stable of 4 clients including Safaricom and Stanbic Bank. Although this will enable it to expand its revenue base, it is clear that Scangroup has taken on the acquisition path to market share dominance rather than the superior product offering approach.

Future Prospects

The firm's dominant market position makes the firm well positioned to take advantage of the robust economic growth. However, the firm must do more to create value for its clients with a view to boosting profitability.
